School technology
At Terry Fox School, we believe that technology can be a tool to enhance and support the learning of each student. There can be benefits from using technology to support learning, and learning how to use technology appropriately is important. Digital Citizenship is an approach to using technology appropriately. This approach is taught in classrooms, modelled by teachers, and expected of all students.
Students have the opportunity to access and use technology to support their learning, and are also responsible to use technology in appropriate and ethical ways. To support this work, all students, staff and parents must follow established standards of appropriate and ethical use while using technology.
Every classroom is equipped with a SmartBoard. Terry Fox School has a technology device ratio of 3 students for every 1 device (laptop, chromebook, or ipad). For our current population, that means that the maximum number of tech devices in the school is 214. These devices are organized and shared between classrooms, and we have a booking system that teachers use in order to ensure equitable distribution of resources.
Personal Electronic Devices
At Terry Fox School, we follow “Away for the Day” guidelines as developed by the CBE to align with Ministerial Order #014/2024: Standards for the Use of Personal Mobile Devices and Social Media in Schools.
All personal devices brought to school must be powered off or set to silent mode and stored out of sight in student backpacks throughout the school day including during lunch while on school property.
Technology Used for Learning at the CBE
Digital technologies are changing the way we deliver educational programs to our students. We use a variety of technology tools to support and personalize each student’s learning. Tech tools include hardware (such as laptops, iPads, iPods) and software (like G Suite for Education, and D2L). Visit the CBE website for more information on some of the CBE-wide digital technologies.
- Gmail & Google Workspace for Education: an online space to create documents, presentations and websites wherever internet access is available. It is solely for teacher and student-created work, and not for student records, grades, demographics or other such information. For assistance with login issues and more go to the technical support site.
- eLibrary: an online catalogue for all CBE school libraries (learning commons) with detailed information on books, DVDs and other resources that are available to borrow and online resources offered by Calgary Public Library and others. It is available to parents/guardians, students and staff.
- SchoolMessenger: our communication tool that allows schools to easily and securely send email, phone and text messages to parents / guardians and independent students. To receive messages from our school, be sure to subscribe. To change the email address or phone number where you receive your messages, contact our school. Add our school email address to your address book or "safe senders list" to make sure our messages don't go to your spam folder.
- MyCBE: this application connects to our student information system, providing parents, students and staff access to academic information and transactions. It allows parents to view their children’s schedule, grades and attendance; see their learning activities using Brightspace by D2L; register for school, transportation and lunch supervision; pay fees and request fee waivers; and book school conferences.
Our Wireless Network
